A single-vehicle accident occurred at I-69 SB near the 229-mile marker at 4:45 p.m. Several other vehicles had separate, minor accidents as a result of the first accident.

According to Major Michael Warner from the Madison County Sheriff's Department, the car, a 2011 Ford Econoline van with a family of 3 from Fort Wayne, went off the west side of the roadway into a ditch. It rolled and eventually rested on the passenger side back on the roadway, he said.

East Madison Fire Department transported individuals from the scene with serious and life-threatening injuries, Todd Harmeson, public information officer for Chesterfield Police Department and East Madison Fire Territory, said.

Warner said the driver was transported to St. Vincent Anderson and was pronounced dead. A female was airlifted to IU Methodist and a male was transported to St. Vincent Anderson; both are in stable condition.

I-69 SB and NB are both open.

The crash remains under investigation.
