Cardinal Kitchen: Your resource for overall health

And it's free, too!

It is no secret that maintaining a budget in college is a challenging task. With limited time and the expenses of bills and textbooks, many college students must make unhealthy budget cuts. These decisions can look like skipping meals, avoiding buying textbooks, and more to make ends meet. But did you know Cardinal Kitchen, Ball State University’s student-run food pantry, is free for students?

If you’ve had to make a similar decision based on your financial situation, you may be considered food insecure. Food insecurity is defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Who does food insecurity affect?

Forbes Advisor conducted a study in 2020 where more than 39% of students experienced food insecurity within a given month. Pre-pandemic, Affordable College listed the statistic even higher at an alarming 45% of students.

Food insecurity not only can affect a student’s health, but grades may suffer as well. Studies show when a student is not receiving proper nutritional benefits, their ability to learn is harshly depleted. The stress on the brain of not knowing where your next meal is coming from or crunching numbers to see if you can eat dinner weighs on a person. Studies from Feeding America show focusing on an empty stomach is impossible.
