Empower has been given two more fines for violating the elections code during the two days of the first round of voting.

The slate was previously fined $125 for campaign violations during Ball State’s 2019 Student Government Association (SGA) election. The two new fines bring Empower’s total fines to $165 this election cycle.

The first new offense was a member of the slate wearing an Empower T-shirt Feb. 24 inside Bracken Library, where a voting booth was located.

“The Board found that this was in violation of the physical campaign restrictions that were established, as campaign materials are ‘any type of promotional material that contains an executive slate’s logo, name, and/or candidates’ names,’” according to a statement released by the elections board.

The slate was to be fined $25, but due to the scale of the violation, it was dropped to $15.

The second violation was a member of Empower sending out an email to “roughly 135 students” asking them to vote on Feb. 24.

According to the official statement, “candidates must cease and remove all campaign material from the University Computing Services 24 hours before the election.” Empower was fined $25.

Empower would have faced a third violation for direct messaging a student asking them to vote for Empower. The elections board waved this violation due to the message not being sent on a Ball State messaging system.
