The Ball State women's golf team looks to extend its winning streak to three when it travels to Bloomington, Indiana, to take part in the Indiana Invitational.
The invitational includes nine different schools, five of which are members of the Mid-American Conference: Ball State, Toledo, Akron, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan. The MAC teams will meet once again in two weeks on April 21-23 at the conference championships in Ohio. The Cardinals are hoping to use this weekend's event as a stepping stone into the MAC Championships.
“I think [this weekend] is pretty important because we came off two wins, and to keep our momentum going into this one, which will push us forward into MAC [play],” sophomore Sydney Anderson said.
Last weekend at the Eastern Kentucky University Colonel Classic, Anderson recorded her first collegiate victory, shooting +4 on the weekend, which helped the Cardinals take first in the field of 13 teams by 13 strokes. Anderson's performance in Kentucky earned her MAC Golfer of the Week status.
“[Last weekend] was really big for me," Anderson said. "I’ve had a tough season with my swing and everything has been not really good, so that was really important for me going into MAC [tournament] to get my confidence up.”
Two weeks ago, the Cardinals picked up first out of 22 teams at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of William & Mary. The last two tournaments mark Ball State's first time winning back-to-back contests since October 2012.
“[The two wins] have done tremendous things for each individual on this team and for the team as a whole," head coach Katherine Mowat said. "It’s hard to win golf tournaments, whether it’s as a team or as an individual when you’re up against 10 or 20 other teams every week.”
This weekend's hosts, Indiana, are coming off a contest in Mexico where the Hoosiers finished tied for 12th out of 14 teams.
The contest consists of 54 holes, with 36 of them being completed on Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday. Action on both days kicks off at 9 a.m. at Indiana University.
