On Sept. 1, America’s Hometown Band will perform a song dedicated to the Ball State marching band at 6:30 p.m. in Westside Park.

The song, “The Bells of Victory,” was composed by Wayne Hinkel, a former band director at Yorktown High School and a former drum major for Indiana University’s Marching Hundred.

“I am Ball State’s marching band’s number one fan. I have followed this band for over 40 years,” Hinkel said. “I wrote [the song], and the very tag ending on this tune has part of the Ball State fight song in it.”

Caroline Hand is Ball State’s current marching band director. Hinkel said he wrote the song because he admires the work of the band and their director.

“It’s a zippy little tune … I’m going to conduct it tomorrow night,” Hinkel said. “I’m finishing tomorrow night by having the entire audience shout ‘Ball State’ as the tag ending on the end of the march.”

“The Bells of Victory” will go on to become the second of five scenes in a larger musical suite that Hinkel is writing for Ball State’s 100th anniversary in 2018.
