Village business suffers, students work out as winter weather loosens grip

Extreme temperatures and warnings of frostbite kept students indoors Monday and today as many Ball State facilities and surrounding restaurants temporarily closed their doors.

Scotty’s Brewhouse along with The Cup, Greek’s Pizzeria, The Chug and other Village businesses did not open Monday, leaving people to ease their hunger pains elsewhere.

The severe weather not only created a dent in customer numbers, but lengthened delivery times for businesses that offer delivery, such as Greek’s Pizzeria, a measure that sometimes angered customers.
“The fact of the matter is that delivery takes time,” Clay Carter, an employee of Greek’s Pizzeria, said.

Along with the Village businesses, several Ball State services and facilities closed or shortened hours after the campus announced its intention to close for Monday and Tuesday, inconveniencing students.
Allen Mudd, a sophomore pre business major, said he was not happy that some dining halls were closed today.

“Tom John not open, and it’s the closest food place to me,” he said. “I’ve had to order pizza the last few days.”

The Student Recreation and Wellness Center was one of the few places students could find escape from their residence halls.
Austin Oosterhoff, a rec center employee, said today at 1 p.m., he had scanned 200 people into the gym.

“Normally by 2 o’ clock, we’re close to 500 to 600 people,” he said. “It is less, but not as much [less] as I would’ve expected.”

Despite temperatures capable of causing frostbite in 10 minutes, Oosterhoff wasn’t fazed about having to walk to work, a trip that takes him 10 minutes to complete.

“If you’re smart about it and you bundle up, it’s not bad,” he said.

The rec center provided some students a reprieve from their cabin fever.
“I was sick of being cooped up inside,” Megan Brown, a graduate student, said. “I really wanted to get some energy and out and brave the cold to come here.”
