Search committee members outnumbers students in presidential forum

• 7 students attended today’s presidential search forum
• Board of Trustees member said they still received good feedback.
• During search for President Jo Ann Gora students rallied for more student involvement.

Students were able to speak their mind today on the search for a new university president.

Seven students attended the presidential search student forum in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Cardinal Hall. They spoke to the Board of Trustees and school administrators during the one-hour meeting, sharing their opinions as a representation the student body.

Wayne Estopinal, leader of Ball State’s committee and board member, said even though there were few students in attendance, they still received good feedback.

“I know students are busy,” Estopinal said. “It would have been great to have a packed house, but I think the comments we got were very valuable. The individuals that were here had some very broad-based comments and a great representation of in-state, out-of-state [and] minorities.”

During the last presidential search in 2004, the only student involvement was the single student member on the board.

During the search that eventually brought President Jo Ann Gora to Ball State, the Daily News reported a group of 15 students marched from the Scramble Light to the Administration Building shouting, “One more student” in protest the board’s failure to address student representation in the search.

Students in attendance today shared their opinions on what Ball State is doing well and areas to focus on in the future, including academic advising, diversity and athletics.

“I’m a fifth generation student [and] to see the campus grow from when I was younger to what it is today just in the last 10 years has been outstanding,” Jason Pickell, a sophomore political science major, said. “We need a president with similar goals to President Gora, campus improvements, a new college and athletics.”

Estopinal said comments from the student forum and additional forums will be compiled in a document.

By Saturday evening, a document with the resolved specifications for candidates will be distributed by search firm Baker and Associates.
