Speaker Ryan Penneau presented “Take Back College” in an Excellence in Leadership program.
The focus of the speech was to motivate students to use organizations and opportunities to benefit their lives after graduation.
Penneau used humor to lighten the mood and personal stories to add emotion to his high-energy lecture.
There are many motivations for going to college, but they should all lead to an intentional university experience, said a speaker on campus.
College speaker Ryan Penneau visited Ball State on Monday to give his “Take Back College” presentation, which focused on motivating student’s to take advantage of their time in school to benefit their life after graduation.
The main point that Penneau wanted students to take away from his presentation was “to have an intentional college experience.” Penneau’s high-energy method of speaking pushed the crowd to be enthusiastic about changing their attitudes about college.
Last summer, Penneau spoke at Ball State’s Accelerate program, and Excellence in Leadership leaders asked him to return to campus because of popular demand.
Penneau used humor to make the audience laugh several times in his hour and a half speech, but he used personal stories to make his points forward in an emotional manner.
In one story, Penneau explained how he helped stop his best friend’s plans of suicide after experiencing a harsh coming out to his family.
The presentation became interactive when Penneau asked students to find a partner and reveal “who they are, who they want to be and who they are pretending to be,” aiming to make the members of the crowd step out of their comfort zones.
“I feel really motivated, and I feel that the words he spoke to me will be put to use,” Hannah Dwyer, a freshman secondary education major, said.
Penneau ended his presentation by encouraging students to get involved in campus organizations and find new experiences and passions. Several students lingered after the speech to have more in-depth conversations with Penneau.
