Instead of checking out a book on Nov. 6, Jess Cooney, a senior telecommunications major, stood in Bracken Library hoping to win a ticket to see Jim Gaffigan Friday night. She succeeded.

Last week, the staff at John R. Emens Auditorium generated buzz about the comedian’s performance by having a scavenger hunt contest for five pairs of free tickets. Every day, the staff posted a trivia question about Gaffigan on its Facebook page, and after someone posted a correct answer, a photo clue was released. Within minutes, a lucky winner would collect a voucher to take to the box office to get the tickets.

Cooney said she was getting ready to leave campus after her classes when she remembered the contest. She said she had a gut feeling about it and decided to park her car again and wait for the clue to be posted.

“I pieced together that all of the clues were within walking distance [of Emens].” Cooney said. “The first clue was at the Scramble Light and the second clue was at Frog Baby. I decided to hang out around Pruis for easy location access, if you will.”

After seeing the picture clue of the Naked Lady, Cooney started running for Bracken Library. She arrived and approached a librarian at the main checkout desk for the ticket voucher. She was the first one there and won the tickets.

“This show was something both my boyfriend and I really wanted to see but couldn’t afford,” Cooney said. “I’ve never really won anything in my life, and this is just really exciting. And I get to have a super fun date night out of it, too.”

Kelsey Cox, a graduate student studying student affairs administration in higher education, also won a pair of tickets to the show. She was eating lunch while scrolling through Facebook. She saw the photo clue on the Emens Facebook page, and knew that the voucher was at the Scramble Light.

“I work in Lucina, so I walked over just to see if the voucher was still there and it was. It was luck,” Cox said. “I didn’t even know about the contest until then. I was pretty excited though. I wanted tickets really bad, but $50 wasn’t really in my budget.”

Cox said she is a big fan of Gaffigan’s popular skit about Hot Pockets.

“Jim talks about how you can’t ever get Hot Pockets to the right temperature. It’s either boiling lava hot or still frozen in the middle,” Cox said. “He says that you never feel good after eating them. He says now that there are breakfast Hot Pockets, you can eat one for breakfast, another for lunch and be dead by dinner.”

In addition to his Hot Pockets skits, Gaffigan is known for his frequent appearances on “Late Show with David Letterman” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.” His stand-up comedy has gained him a variety of accolades and an increasing fanbase across the United States. He has appeared in a variety of movies and television shows and starred in the Broadway production “That Championship Season.”

On Friday, Gaffigan will be at Emens Auditorium on his White Bread tour. The show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets cost between $40-50. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the Emens box office.
