Multi-million dollar development looks to keep customers in Muncie

Muncie aims to become a competitor for shoppers in Central Indiana with a new multi-million dollar development.

This new development will be located at the 600 block of East McGalliard Road.

The cost is estimated to be between $10 million to $12 million to build and feature five to six outlets that will take up 800,000 square feet, including a Dick’s Sporting Goods store.

Muncie already has two sporting goods stores, said Todd Donati, president of Delaware County Commissioners, but he thinks they won’t be harmed by Dick’s coming to Muncie.

“I think all three can survive with the type of products they [offer],” he said. “They say competition is healthy and in this situation, I think it will beneficial to everyone.”

An issue faced by Muncie businesses is that customers are likely to drive out of Delaware County to buy products from larger, more recognized chain store. Dick’s is a solution to that problem, Donati said.

“The unfortunate thing is that when they drive down there, they are spending money in a different county and spending additional money either eating or stopping at other stores,” he said.

Dick’s is the only business to be named that will move into the new development, however, Donati said another unnamed “big store” is forthcoming as well as three or four brand name outlets.

An estimate of more than 100 jobs will be created in the construction of the development, Donati said.

The official release of the potential economic impact should come out within the next week or two, he said.
