Ball State Amnesty International has joined the fight against Indiana’s HJR-6, a bill that would define marriage as between one man and one woman.

The organization sent a letter to university president Jo Ann Gora today urging her to join other universities to take a stand against the bill.

“President Gora, please put Ball State University on the correct side of history—the side that believes that the rights of sexual minorities must be preserved and protected,” the letter pleaded.

The letter said the group voted unanimously to send the letter and ask Gora to speak publicly against the legislation.

“Our university has already made a powerful commitment to its LGBT community,” said the letter. “Standing by while HJR-6 is debated in our legislature would undermine that commitment and tarnish Ball State’s record of accepting all of its students and faculty, regardless of sexual orientation.”

Student Senate will vote today on whether the three student members of University Senate will recommend that the university take a stance. University Senate will vote Thursday to determine whether Ball State will stand against the bill along with Indiana University, DePauw University and Wabash College.

In the letter, Ball State Amnesty International said that opposing the bill is simply the right thing to do.

“Uphold the commitment we have made to our LGBT students and colleagues,” said the letter. “Help oppose HJR-6. It is the right thing for BSU to do.”
