One couple said they added to their family collection at a book sale hosted by the Phi Sigma Tau, a philosophy honors society.
Gloria Gevirtz, a Spanish major, and her husband, Julian Gevirtz, an assistant professor of mathematics, bought a complete volume set of novels from Spanish author Camilo José Cela at the sale.
Although Gloria is originally from Chile, she said she doesn’t know how to read Spanish. Her husband reads the novels to her and their children to help them learn the language.
“The books have considerable value as adornment,” Julian said. “We have several collections at home.”
The book sale is one of Phi Sigma Tau’s fundraising events to support activities, such as the publication of its journal “Dialogue.” Books cost $1 for paperbacks and $3 for select hardcover books.
The sale ranges from textbooks to fiction.
The book sale began in 2002 with the philosophy club. Since then, the philosophy honorary society has taken it over.
Kevin Mager, a senior philosophy major working for the event, said the organization relies on book donations to keep the event going. Mager said they often receive book donations from people retiring or wanting to clear out their offices.
“We come and pick [the books] up,” Mager said. “They are more than happy to let us do the heavy lifting.”
The sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in North Quad.
