Christy Woods to host guided tours Saturday

10/04/12 3:59 p.m.

As the leaves change to oranges, reds and browns for the beginning of fall, Christy Woods will be hosting tours to learn about the trees and the history of the laboratory on the 17-acre property.

Guided tours are at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Riverside Avenue gate entrance to Christy Woods.

"People should go if they're interested in finding out about Christy Woods and the forest of Indiana and the Eastern United States and our history and our natural heritage," John Taylor, land manager of the Field Station and Environmental Education Center, said. "And to see the fall colors. I think it is going to be a pretty nice day."

Christy Woods was part of the original land gift from the Ball brothers in 1918. The land is also home to the university's two main greenhouses - the Teaching and Research Greenhouse and the Orchid Greenhouse.

Taylor guides the walk twice every fall. He also does winter greenhouse tours in January and wildflower tours in the spring.

In 1940, Ball State christened the land Christy Woods after O.B. Christy, who was head of the science department .

Taylor encouraged people to come to the event.

"I hope they get a little bit of appreciation of Indiana's natural heritage and our history here and the significance of having a well-cared for natural laboratory on the campus," he said.
