A local family hosted the fifth annual Garth Walk at Muncie Central High School on Saturday in memory of a loved one.
The event was hosted in memory of Garth Rector, whose death was caused by violence in 2008.
Organizers also hoped to promote awareness of violent crimes that happen in Delaware County.
The walk attracted approximately 200 people this year, some of who were families of fellow victims of violent crimes.
They came not just so they could share their stories, but also to share their support.
Key speakers at the opening ceremony of the event included Rector's youngest sister and head of the walk, Angie Mock, Mayor Dennis Tyler and Ball State alum Marwin Strong.
Mock opened with a thank you to the supporters and those who donated. She introduced Tyler as the second speaker.
Tyler had been a friend to the Rector family for many years before Rector's death.
In his speech, he expressed his support for all of the families affected by these crimes.
Following Tyler was the final speaker, Strong, who shared his own experience as a victim of violent crime in Muncie.
The walk was set up to go one mile around the school, leaving the south parking lot to go down Wheeling Avenue, through Minnetrista, down Walnut Street and back to the high school.
In a brief interview during the walk, Tyler talked about the importance the event has on everyone in the community.
"One dollar means a lot. A thousand dollars means a lot," he said. "I don't think it's not about the donations. I think it's about the families and the community involved with their support."
