INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana War Memorial Foundation is launching a program to honor Hoosier veterans by placing their names on bricks that will encircle the landmark Soldiers and Sailors Monument in the heart of downtown Indianapolis.

The foundation said the bricks will help ensure the nation's heroes will not be forgotten. The bricks can be purchased for a $100 charitable donation. Each brick will be engraved with the name, rank, branch and dates of service of an individual veteran.

Indiana War Memorial Commission Executive Director Stewart Goodwin said the program will begin with the dedication of five bricks, including two honoring former Indiana Govs. Edgar Whitcomb and Joe Kernan. Whitcomb served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, while Kernan served as a Navy fighter pilot in Vietnam.
