Ind. excise police issue 77 citations over weekend

For the second weekend in a row, Indiana State Excise Police descended on the Ball State area, this time issuing 77 citations and making arrests, including a juvenile detained for alcohol possession and fleeing police officers.

There was no immediate word from the agency, which enforces the state's alcohol and tobacco laws, whether undercover officers would be at Thursday's season-opening football game against Eastern Michigan at Scheumann Stadium.

Last weekend, 57 tickets were issued as Ball State students returned for move-in weekend to start the semester. But both weekends, part of the state's Intensified College Enforcement program to curb underage drinking, were small compared to the 178 tickets issued over the weekend at the Scheid Diesel Fest in Terre Haute, Ind., a tractor pull that brings in spectators from across the country.

Those detained in Terre Haute included a 17-year-old female, who was observed by officers dancing topless on the roof of a bus and was cited for illegal consumption, public nudity and public intoxication.

The female was in the parking lot of the Burlington Coat Factory, where four other females were performing on poles in the back of pickup trucks and cited for public nudity as well. The four females were visible to passing traffic from U.S. 41.

In Muncie, Be Here Now, a bar located on Dill Street, was cited Friday for purchasing alcohol from another retail permit holder. Indiana law requires beer, wine and liquor be purchased from a licensed wholesaler.

A phone call to Whitney Lewis, owner of Be Here Now, was not immediately returned.

On Saturday, a 19-year-old Ball State student was arrested for public intoxication and illegal possession of alcohol after he tested .22 percent BAC.
