FOOTBALL: Ball State leads 10-0 after first quarter

Edwards scores from 7 yards out, Schott hits 52-yard field goal

Ball State didn't waste anytime on scoring its first touchdown of the season as it scored in the opening possession.

After starting on its own 20-yard line, Ball State took less than four minutes before running back Jahwan Edwards scored on a 7-yard run. The biggest play of the drive was a 37-yard pass to wide receiver Jamill Smith who almost broke for a touchdown before being caught at the Eastern Michigan 20-yard line.

On Eastern Michigan's first possession, quarterback Alex Gillett drove the offense to just inside Ball State territory before having to deal with a 4th-and-1 from the 49. The Eagles tried converting, but linebacker Travis Freeman stopped running back Dominique Sherrer just before the first down marker.

On its next possession, Ball State drove again into the red zone before an offensive pass interference penalty moved the offense back. The Cardinals were still able to get points as kicker Steven Schott hit a career-long 52-yard field goal to put Ball State up 10-0 with 1:58 left in the first.

Wenning completed 12 of 15 passes for 93 yards. Smith leads all receivers with 52 yards on three catches.
