Gov. Mitch Daniels to be chosen as president of Purdue University

Purdue University plans to announce the appointment of a new university president on Thursday.

Unnamed sources have confirmed to the Indianapolis Star and WISH-TV that Gov. Mitch Daniels will succeed current president, France C+â-¦rdova.

C+â-¦rdova has held office since July 2007 and announced in July 2011 that she would be stepping down.

The Indiana Senate approved a bill to prohibit state universities from setting mandatory retirement ages for school administrators in January 2012.

Previously, higher education administrators at state universities were required to leave office at the age of 65, unless an extension was voted upon and granted.

Ball State president Jo Ann Gora, who reached the required age in 2011, was approved by the university board of trustees to stay in office until June 30, 2016, according to a 2011 Star Press article.

The Indianapolis Star reported that two sources close to the governor have confirmed the appointment and a formal announcement by the Purdue Board of Trustees will be made 10 a.m. Thursday at Loeb Playhouse.

Daniels office had no comment regarding new title for the second term governor, but WISH-TV political reporter Jim Shella said it is likely Daniels will complete his term as governor and Purdue will appoint an interim president.
