Ball State's Sponsored Programs Office welcomes Miller as new director

The Ball State Sponsored Programs Office will begin the next strategic five-year plan with a new director after announcing that Justin Miller will replace director Kristi Koriath, effective July 1.

"I'm genuinely excited about the future," Miller said. "I think it's kind of appropriate that the office gets to pick a new director right before we jump into a new strategic plan."

Koriath is retiring and will step down from her position on June 30 after working in the Sponsored Programs Office since 1990 and as director since 2008.

"She's going to be missed so much," Miller said. "Kristi [Koriath] is a very compassionate person and has amazing people skills. The institution really loves her and her leadership will definitely be missed."

The university's Sponsored Programs Office is responsible for assisting faculty and personnel who are looking for external sources to fund their creative, research or scholarship projects.

Koriath said the search committee looked externally and internally before eventually settling with Miller.

She said she was satisfied with the committee's recommendation.

"I am very pleased," Koriath said. "We've been very happy with Justin's performance in the office as proposal manager.

"It was a good fit."

Miller held the position of proposal manager and has worked with the Sponsored Programs Office since 2007. He said the new position will require a broader and less intensive hand in developing proposals.

"I won't be as day-to-day involved in the development of proposals," Miller said. "The director serves as the authorizing official for the institution. There's a lot more oversight over those proposals."

Miller said the office has focused on pushing quantity, which was one of the strategic goals.

With change coming for Ball State into the new strategic plan, however, Miller said he is trying to take the next logical step in the process for the office.

"I think the next five years we're going to try and maintain [quantity] but also shift to sort of examining the quality also of what we're submitting," he said.

Koriath said Miller fits the position perfectly because of the experience he has within the office.

"We always are eager to be perceived as an office that's user-friendly so he fits that bill," Koriath said. "He already is well-schooled in our office operations and so we think that this will be a good match for us."
