Ball State to build new state of the art greenhouse

On Monday, Ball State officially received the green light from the State Budget Committee to proceed with construction of a new greenhouse.

The new facility will function as a teaching and research area and will also house the Wheeler Orchid Collection and Species Bank.

The current Orchid Greenhouse was built approximately 40 years ago. The Ball State Board of Trustees approved in July 2011 a proposition to name the new 1,500 square-foot, freestanding greenhouse after Dr. Joe and Alice Rinard.

Joe Rinard donated $600,000 to Ball State in his wife's memory. Alice Rinard graduated from the university in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She also earned a Master of Arts in speech pathology in 1963.

The construction project will be funded through BSU Foundation gifts.

Democratic state Rep. Mike White, from Muncie, said in a news release that the structure will provide "incredible resources located at a state university."

"Ball State continues to bring national and international prestige to itself and the state of Indiana," White said.

The collection is home to more than 1,200 plants, including more than 500 different species and more than 100 hybrid orchids.
