Virtual career fair lets students chat online with employers

Students can meet employers in a nontraditional way during a virtual career fair hosted today by Career Development Professionals of Indiana, Inc.

James Mitchell, associate director of employer relations and recruitment programs in the Career Center, said virtual career fairs are not much different than typical career fairs, aside from the fact that they're happening online.

"It's another opportunity for students and alumni to interact with employers," Mitchell said. "What's important is that folks find a good fit with the organizations, and vice versa, that the employers find a good fit with the prospective employers."

Mitchell said an advantage of the virtual career fair is it allows students and alumni to interact with employers that don't often make it out to physical career fairs on Ball State's campus. He said 19 employers are participating in this state-wide fair. The list of employers, which is available on the website where students can go to register for the fair, tinyurl.com/6rlbtcg, includes names such as Teach for America and Enterprise Rent-a-Car.

A disadvantage to a virtual fair, Mitchell said, is it might be more difficult for students and employers to make connections online than in person. He said virtual fairs can be a hit or miss, and encouraged interested students to take advantage of services offered by the Career center year-round, including in the summer.

As of Tuesday morning, Mitchell said 67 Ball State affiliates had registered to "attend" the virtual fair. More than 500 people state-wide had registered to attend.
