Espresso Yourself to showcase talents

Students can show off their talents tonight at Woodworth Complex.

Espresso Yourself, a talent show and coffee social, is at 7 p.m. and is hosted by the student multicultural advisors of Housing and Residence Life. Coffee and cookies will be provided for the event from Ball State Dining for participants to snack on as they enjoy the various acts, said Elvira Rajala-Wilk, residence hall director for Studebaker West Complex.

Destiny Conely, multicultural advisor for Noyer Complex and Studebaker West Complex said the night is meant for students to kick back.

"It's basically an open mic night. [A] kind of relaxation moment on campus," the senior architecture major said.

Rajala-Wilk said the event always attracts a variety of performers.

"We had some greek students come and step for us last year and that was kind of cool," she said. "Really, just a variety of whatever the students want to bring to us."

Other events the multicultural advisors and multicultural committee have held this year have been an alternative reality game at the beginning of the year and, more recently, a hip-hop program. The program included a showing of the documentary "Beyond Beats and Rhymes" and a poetry slam.

Rajala-Wilk said the difference between the multicultural committee and the multicultural advisors is enrollment status.

"The multicultural advisors are student staff, so they're students that are hired to do, you know, multicultural awareness and advocacy and that sort of thing on campus," Rajala-Wilk said. "The multicultural committee is a group of hall directors and resident managers that get together to do multicultural-type activities for full-time staff as well as students. The multicultural advisors are mainly focused on students."

Rajala-Wilk said Espresso Yourself is organized by the multicultural advisors each year.

"They do it at the end of the year sort of as their final project - for people to come together and share talents and that sort of thing," she said.

Rajala-Wilk said the event has been going on for at least three years.

Around 10 performers participated in last year's events and at least 15 are expected for tonight's event, Conely said.

"Anybody else who wants to come join, please do, please come in," she said. "It's open, so you can reserve ahead of time if you prefer that but if you come in and you have a talent and you didn't write down a list, we will be able to probably put you on there, too."
