Students raised money for charity by competing in events such as tug of war over a pool of green Jell-O.
Delta Zeta held their annual Turtle Tugs event which included an obstacle course, pie eating contest, water balloon dodge ball and tug of war next to the McKinley Avenue parking garage.
Kayla Carney, philanthropy chair for Delta Zeta, said the event was started to raise money for the Painted Turtle Camp in California. The camp was founded to give children who are terminally ill a place to get away and be a kid.
"The camp provides a way for them to have a week of time to where they don't have to think about being sick and they're well and they make sure it's not about being sick," the sophomore hospitality and food management major said. "It's about having a good time and trying not to talk about different disabilities or what's debilitating them. They make it fun for them."
Also apart of the event was live music provided by local band Trackless. The band consists of senior Will Smith, senior Jeremy Jones, junior Jordan West, junior Jesse Gaze and freshman Jon Nelson.
West plays drums for Trackless and is also a member of Delta Zeta.
"We're here because my sorority needed music and it usually comes through speakers, just an iPod, and I thought it would be better to have some live music," West said.
Jones, who does vocals, said the band wanted to get people pumped up.
"[We wanted to] encourage everybody to slip 'n slide," Jones said.
Delta Zeta set a goal to raise $5,000 for the Painted Turtle Camp. As of 5 p.m. on Sunday, Delta Zeta member Jacqlyn Stark said they did not know how much money they had raised. Students were encouraged to put together teams of six people, which came with a $60 donation and a guarantee to get soaked with water balloons or green Jell-O.
"It was super fun and in the end, everyone just gets thrown in the Jell-O - no matter who you are or whether you participated or not," Stark said.
This is not the first event Delta Zeta has put on this year to raise money, Carney said.
"Dance Marathon was one of our teams this year and we had a number of other greek competitive teams, and their money for the entry fee also goes to this to raise money for it," Stark said.
Delta Zeta also puts on events in the Fall Semester and takes donations for the Painted Turtle Camp year around.
"We do this every year in the Spring Semester and then we have a philanthropy in the Fall Semester called Mel's Walk, which is just for our chapter here at Ball State," Stark said.
At the end of the day, and after being covered in green Jell-O, members of Delta Zeta said they felt Turtle Tugs was a success and were looking forward to next year, Carney and Stark both said.
"Next year, I'm hoping to see more people," Carney said.
