Cardinal Charity Committee to promote events at Scramble Light

A group of Ball State students wants to make a change for the local community - by inviting others to have fun and help.

The Cardinal Charity Committee is having their first McKinley Week, a week of events in which they expect to raise awareness of local issues in the community, from April 10-14. Events throughout the week will include an obstacle course, a scavenger hunt and a chariot race.

CCC will be handing out registration forms and fliers today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Scramble Light for teams interested in participating. Registration lasts until April 6.

The organization encourages students to form teams and register. Registration for the entire week of events is $50, but registration for individual events is available as well. An additional donation of $10 will be requested at the event.

Matthew Gage, president of CCC, said the organization plans on donating all funds raised to the Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth of Muncie, a local foster care facility.

"Our organization was founded to improve conditions in the local community because a lot of existent campus organizations were donating to organizations across the country, but it's always better to help the local community first," he said.

Gage said it was important for the organization to create events in which students would have fun while helping the community through donations.

"We sat down and, even from the beginning, we wanted something that would be both beneficial for the community and the students," Gage said. "Many students think just from hearing the word 'charity' that it's about cleaning off the side of a road or just doing community service."

Their last event of the week will be a chariot race on McKinley Avenue. Jeff Hardesty, who is helping organize the event, said teams will have the chance to build their own chariot before the event and use it for the race. The winners of the race will have the opportunity to go skydiving.

Students participating in other events will also have the chance to win prizes; the team that raises the most money will be awarded with a prize.
