3 hurt in southwest Ind. shootings

DUGGER, Ind. - Three people were wounded in a series of shootings that started early Sunday morning outside a bar in a western Indiana town, state police said.

All three were flown to Indiana University-Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with shotgun wounds to the head, Sgt. Joe Watts said in a news release.

The Sullivan County Sheriff's Department responded to a 911 call about 3:30 a.m. at the Uptown Tavern in Dugger (75 miles southwest of Indianapolis) where they found 39-year-old Patrick D. Ruff, of Jasonville, lying wounded in the parking lot, police said. Inside the tavern, police found 31-year-old LeighAnn Lovelace, of Linton. Both were apparently shot outside the bar, police said.

The suspect, who was not identified, then fired a shot into the windshield of an unrelated passing vehicle driven by James B. Gardner, 24, of Elnora, Watts said. Gardner followed the suspect to a residence outside of Dugger, where Watts said the two men fought and the suspect was also shot in the head.

Police believe the two shootings resulted from an earlier domestic dispute. Authorities believe the three people were acquaintances.

Ruff was listed in critical condition Sunday evening, police said. Lovelace's injuries were not life-threatening, and she was expected to be released later Sunday night.

The suspect's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Police did not release his identity, and Watts said Sunday evening charges were pending.

Gardner was arrested on preliminary charges of battery and drunken driving, Watts said. He was being held in Knox County Jail on $38,000 bond. Jail officials didn't know if he had an attorney.
