Student Center Ballroom to be transformed into an ice rink

Ball State students looking to enjoy the benefits of winter while also trying to stay warm are in luck this weekend.

Late Nite, in collaboration with University Program Board, will turn the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom into an ice-skating rink. On Saturday starting at 9 p.m. during Late Nite and again on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m., students will have the rare opportunity of skating inside the Student Center.

The ballroom floor will be covered piece-by-piece with synthetic ice, a solid polymer material that has been specially designed to mimic the real ice of traditional rinks. The surface is 20 feet by 40 feet and allows for more than 30 people to skate at a time.

UPB programming director and junior hospitality major Danielle Curnutte said this is Ball State's second time installing an ice-skating rink and bringing the experience back for a second time is a good idea.

"We wanted something fun that students could do on a Sunday," Curnutte said. "We thought this was a great way to bring students together during the time of winter."

On Saturday night, the ice rink will be a part of Late Nite's "Walking in the Late Nite Wonderland," a winter-themed version of its weekly parties. Holiday music and decorations will add to the theme as well.

Hannah Harrison, Late Nite's assistant director for programs, said she hopes to see students take an interest.

"We've been having really good attendance to our Late Nite events so far this semester," Harrison said. "Having the ice-skate rink will be new. It'll hit a lot of students who have never experienced that on campus with us before."

Students wanting to skate need their student IDs and guests will cost $1. Ice skates will be provided, as well as food, drinks and giveaways.
