Students represent pro-life beliefs

Several students stood out in the December weather to present their message of pro-life support at the Scramble Light on Thursday.

Ball State Students for Life stood at the intersection of McKinley and Riverside avenues from 11:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. to educate people walking by and peacefully hand out fliers with their message.

The event was created as the result of collaboration between Ball State Students for Life and two of its members, senior psychology major Becca Mumma and junior sociology major Nick Marchi, who were working on a class project.

"I was taking a social movements class, and I had an option to participate in a movement for a project, so my partner and I decided to do the pro-life movement," Marchi said. "We just discovered Ball State Students for Life [and] started going to meetings and here we are."

Members of the student organization stood in a line, holding up pro-life posters such as "Abortion is Murder" and passed out pamphlets to students who were interested. Even though the topic is very controversial, the group experienced little hostility.

"A lot more people have been supportive than I thought," junior dietetics major Kate Beard said. "We've been counting them and we've had over 300 thumbs up or friendly honks, so that was impressive. There have been some people who have been kind of negative, but really we've been focusing on not getting in other people's faces and just being here to talk to people who have questions."

The group is still young and said they hope that events like this will help advertise the organization and the cause that they're advocating.

"Nobody was doing it, so I felt like it was important to step up and tell people that this is important and this is something that we should be talking about," Beard said.
