Two burglaries occur over Thanksgiving Break

As students returned to campus from the Thanksgiving holiday, the University Police Department took record of two burglaries that occurred during break.

The first reported incident occurred between Wednesday and Sunday of last week at 118 N. Martin Ave.

The residents returned from the holiday and noticed that the back door of their home had been kicked in.

About $1,300 worth of items were stolen from the residence, Bob Fey, UPD assistant chief of police, said.

The second incident occurred between Nov. 22 and Saturday at 1200 W. Ashland Ave.

Fey said both incidents were similar in the way in which they were executed. Both residences had their back doors kicked in.

The second break-in had about $1,000 in damages and stolen property, Fey said.

Before the beginning of break, Fey said burglaries were more likely to occur at times when no one was home, as well as times in which offenders knew certain areas would be empty.

University breaks are an opportune time for these types of incidents to occur, he said.

"Quite frankly, it's not particularly surprising," Fey said. "That number varies from year to year."
