Twister Tournament to raise money for brain tumors

A sorority will climb over once another in a childhood game to remember a sister.

Zeta Kappa, Ball State's chapter of the Kappa Delta sorority, will be holding its annual Twister Tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday in Irving Gym.

The sorority has been holding a Twister Tournament fundraiser since 2004, Zeta Kappa public relations chair Jill Krieger said.

The fundraiser was started when one of the sisters of the sorority, Lindsey Arnold, was diagnosed with a brain tumor back in 2004. At the time, Arnold was only a sophomore that was a member of Kappa Delta. The sorority wanted to help support Arnold and her family pay for medical bills.

The sorority decided to host the Twister Tournament because it was her favorite game, Krieger said.

Despite the money raised by the event, Arnold passed away the next year. Her memory lives through the sorority's annual Twister Tournament.

"Most of us that are currently in the sorority haven't been given a chance to meet her," Krieger said. "But, it's still something that it's part of our tradition so we follow through with it every year so it's like an annual thing too."

The theme this year is "Cowboy." Themes in the past couple of years have been "Twisting the Night Away" and "Rock Star."

Even though all the bills have since been paid for Arnold, Kappa Delta keeps in touch with her mother.

"She actually sends us a letter every year and we send her a letter and … we let her know how much money we've donated this year and all that stuff and she gets really excited," Krieger said.

Last year they raised just under $4,000, Krieger said.

"We don't really have a set goal," she explained. "We just hope to raise as much as possible for the [American] Brain Tumor Association."

Registration as either a four person team or an individual starts at 6:30 p.m. The cost will be $7 per person or $24 per team. Besides taking part in a fun game for a good cause, contestants also have a chance of winning prizes like gift cards and certificates for winning or for best costume, Krieger said.

"Unfortunately, I never had the chance of meeting her but it's still something that's, you know, personal to us because she was initiated into our sorority," Kreiger said.
