Students to feel hunger through banquet

People will get a taste of world hunger at a simulation dinner on Wednesday.

Ball State's chapter of Oxfam America and Student Government Association will be presenting a hunger banquet in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom.

The event is free and open to the public, and will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m., but Megan Faulkner, media relations coordinator for Ball State's Oxfam America, is expecting the majority of participants to be students.

"The goal of the hunger banquet is to really bring the hunger problem down to a level that can truly be quantified for college students, and that can truly be illustrated in a real life scenario," Faulkner said.

Students and participants will be handed a card when they arrive to the banquet. The card will separate people based on income or class level and the goal is to help represent the income of a variety of people around the world.

Faulkner said the way the dinner portion of the banquet works is that very few people will receive full dinners, a higher number will receive a small dinner and the vast majority of people will receive a little bit of food.

One in seven people go to bed hungry every night, according to a press release. With food prices reaching a record high in 2010, the organizations are encouraging students to educate themselves and take action.

"It really illustrates how many people are given so little and how few people are given so much," Faulkner said.
