Saving Orphans co-founder speaking to raise student interest in group's cause

Cynthia Prime, co-founder of Saving Orphans through Healthcare and Outreach, will speak today at 7:30 p.m. in room 125 of the Letterman Building.

She will discuss SOHO and its efforts to create a new college program called Hope Seekers.

SOHO has been working with Cardinal Communications, Ball State's student-run public relations firm, to develop a plan to initiate Hope Seekers and raise student interest in SOHO's cause.

Devan Whitaker, a Cardinal Communications senior account manager, said SOHO is a non-profit organization that works primarily with children in Swaziland. Whitaker said Swaziland has the highest death rate in the world from HIV/AIDs infections, which results in high amounts of orphans or families in which young children raise their siblings. Because many of these children don't have proper documentation, the government will not assist them.

SOHO works primarily to foster self-reliance among these children, Whitaker said. Rather than giving money to people, SOHO funds programs such as health centers and a farm where people can learn how to grow their own food.

Whitaker said SOHO is starting Hope Seekers to encourage frequent and stronger involvement in SOHO, whether through advocating or donating.

"[Hope Seekers] can be beneficial to both the organization and college students," she said. "They offer a lot of different opportunities."

Prime will address these topics and share her stories of her trips to sub-Saharan Africa.

"College kids have more of a passion for making a difference because we are the future and we want to change the world, but sometimes they think they aren't capable of making a difference," Whitaker said. "This is an opportunity to work toward change."
