Planned Parenthood of Indiana offers free HIV tests for World AIDS Day

In recognition of World AIDS Day, Planned Parenthood of Indiana is offering free HIV tests for the first eight days of December.

The free exams are made possible by the Women's Health Fund, a donation option for PPIN supporters. According to their website, the fund "supports low-income women with family planning supplies, cancer screening and sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment."

"HIV testing is essential for prevention, treatment and care," Liz Carroll, PPIN vice president of Patient Services, said in a press release.

The free tests will be administered at the Muncie location, along with 18 other centers around the state.

After Dec. 8, the tests will be given for half price at only eight of those centers, including the Muncie location. Typically, an HIV test costs $25.

The half-price tests were made possible by several grants, including one from the Indiana AIDS Fund.

In 2008, the latest year available for Centers of Disease Control statistics, more than 1.1 million people aged 13 and older were estimated to live with HIV. According to the PPIN press release, more than 10,000 Indiana residents were living with HIV or AIDS this year.

"Knowledge of one's HIV status is the key to preventing the spread of this disease, and that's why we encourage men and women to bring their partners in for testing, too," Carroll said in the press release.

World AIDS Day was created in 1988 to commemorate those who have died from the disease. The day is marked by red ribbons on the shirts of supporters.
