As the campaign draws to a close, Muncie Mayor Sharon McShurley is continuing to rally for votes.
With the election a day away, the incumbent mayor went door to door Saturday in the Whitely neighborhood to let voters know more about her campaign and to try to bring in as many votes as she could.
McShurley departed from Delaware County Republican Headquarters at 10:30 a.m. to complete a second walking campaign of city voting districts.
Despite walking in neighborhoods many would not expect to find support for the mayor in, McShurley enjoys walking in neighborhoods to connect with her constituents.
"If you get a chance to actually talk to a constituent, they may have questions about things that are going on," she said. "They might have a problem that they want to share with you, and we get quite a bit of that often."
McShurley also enjoys seeing the reactions from people when they open their doors. McShurley said she hopes voters know she is listening to their problems.
"People like to be asked for their vote," she said. "People can be fascinated that the mayor is walking up to their door, and they appreciate it that the mayor is asking them about what's going on in their everyday lives."
The Whitely neighborhood has historically leaned heavily towards Democrat candidates, but the Republican Party did not want to leave any districts out in their second sweep.
Many people who answered the door were surprised but pleased to see the mayor.
"I'm happy to see you," said one constituent to the mayor. "I like to be informed on who I'm voting for."
These positive exchanges, however, were not without some negative ones.
At one house, as McShurley walked away from the home, a child leaned out the window and yelled, "Vote Dennis Tyler for Mayor."
McShurley laughed off the remark.
McShurley, although acknowledging that it will be a close race, is confident going forward to Tuesday's election.
"I think we're going to win," she said. "If the voters respond the same way they have responded going door to door, then I believe we are going to win."
