LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Veterans Day ceremonies are about more than extra credit

I went to the bell tower ceremony this morning and thought that went really nice. It was a simple, yet meaningful of honoring our soldiers. However, I was planning on going to the library portion of the event, but I was told the room had filled up.

I understand there is a limited amount of space and the only fair way to decide who gets in is on a first come first serve type idea. This I understand. However, what I overheard people saying on my way out was very unpleasing to me.

The majority of students there only came of receive extra credit and I feel that is very wrong. On my way out, I heard several students worrying about how they would receive their extra credit., rather than any emotion toward the actual event itself.

As I was looking around, I noticed several veterans within the crowd of students. How do you think they felt knowing the only reason students showed up was a higher grade?

That is not the kind of message we as a university should be sending to those in uniform. I do not think teachers should be allowed to give extra credit for an event like that.

I know it is given for events such as guest speakers and musical performance, but that is different. I was not bribed to attend the ceremony; I do not think anyone should. I think it was very rude to allow the veterans being honored to be allowed to see why students were going.

I feel that rewarding students to show up at an event where we are honoring America's heroes is unacceptable. Students like me who come out to an event like this have strong support toward our soldiers, but that message is lost with the bribery.

I feel that it is disrespectful to allow students in who are not there to show real support to our troops. If I were a veteran hearing some of the things that were being said by students, I would feel unappreciated and that is clearly not the goal of the Student Veteran Organization.

I do not know which teachers offered, but it needs to be stopped. And for students who did receive credit or was hoping to, you should feel ashamed for accepting it.

These men and women are the reason America is the land of the free and home of the brave. If you cannot give up 30 min of your time to thank them without expecting rewards, your presence at an event like this is unwelcome.
