INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana University says a student whom the school has urged to return from Egypt in the wake of a classmate's arrest in Cairo during protests has decided to remain in the Middle Eastern nation through the end of the year.
IU spokesman Mark Land says the student says he feels safe on American University's campus about 15 miles from Cairo and wants to complete his semester of studies there.
IU student Luke Gates returned to Indiana on Sunday after being released by authorities who arrested the 21-year-old and two students from other schools for allegedly throwing firebombs at Egyptian security forces.
Gates was one of three IU students taking semester-long courses at American University. A second student has already returned to the U.S. after IU urged him to come home.
