FOOTBALL: Upset bid falls short, Ball State loses at Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. – Unable to hold a three-point lead in the fourth quarter, Ball State saw its Mid-American Conference championship hopes end Tuesday night when Northern Illinois kicker Matthew Sims 34-yard field goal flew through the uprights. The field goal gave the Huskies a 41-38 victory, eliminating the Cardinals from the MAC West race.

Quarterback Chandler Harnish led Northern Illinois 63 yards in 94 seconds to set up Sims for the game-winning kick. The sophomore drilled his second field goal of the night through the uprights with eight seconds to play.

It was Ball State's second consecutive game decided by a field goal in the final minute. Ten days ago, Ball State beat Eastern Michigan on Steven Schott's 44-yard field goal with 11 seconds to play. Tuesday, the Cardinals were unable to give Schott the opportunity to duplicate the feat. Ball State failed to move the ball into field goal position on its second-to-last drive of the game, which began with 2:46 left on the clock.
