FOOTBALL: Ball State leads Northern Illinois 14-0 after first quarter

Howard's 92-yard fumble return highlights play

DEKALB, Ill. – In a game it needs to win to stay in the hunt for the Mid-American Conference championship, Ball State scored first and leads Northern Illinois 14-0 after the first quarter.

The Cardinals took the lead little more than five minutes into the game on a three-yard run by quarterback Keith Wenning. The touchdown was set up a 16-yard pass from Wenning to tight end Zane Fakes.

Northern Illinois was driving deep in Ball State territory with two minutes left in the quarter when quarterback Chandler Harnish rushed for a one-yard gain and was hit by cornerback Andre Dawson. Harnish fumbled and safety Josh Howard picked the ball up at the Cardinals' eight-yard line and returned it 92 yards for a touchdown.

Northern Illinois fumbled twice in the first quarter. The first fumble was recovered by Sean Baker, but Ball State was unable to convert it into points.

Quarterback Keith Wenning has completed six of seven passes for 87 yards. Coming off the best game of his career, wide receiver Torieal Gibson has two receptions for 43 yards.
