Flood on Martin Avenue stalls cars

Martin Avenue flooded Monday between Riverside and University avenues next to the Ball State Honors House, stalling cars.

Flooding along this part of the road is not uncommon. Ron Ball, Muncie Street Department supervisor, said the street floods because a dip in the road collects rainwater instead of allowing the water to flow to the drain located on the corner of Martin and Riverside avenues. Ball said last time the street flooded, no cars became stranded.

"But last time we didn't get as much rain," Ball said.

The water caused four cars to stall between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., Allie St. Amant said. St. Amant, sophomore speech and language pathology major, lives on Martin Street.

"It's usually not this bad, but I've seen it flood two or three times before," she said. "It is a dangerous hazard."

Hannah Strayhorn, junior musical theater directing major and resident of Martin Street, called the police when she saw a car with a handicap hangtag stall in front of her house.

"I wanted to help them out, but I didn't know how," she said.

When the police arrived, Strayhorn said she suggested blocking off the street.

"They said they couldn't because it was a city road," she said.

By about 12:30 p.m., though, yellow barricades prevented traffic from driving through.

Nancy Williams, assistant superintendent of sewer maintenance, said the Sewer Maintenance Department sent trucks to vacuum the high water, because it would not drain quickly. They are planning to investigate long-term solutions and identify precisely why the water pools instead of draining.
