DN_Campus: 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'

Junior public relations major Trevor Oakerson shares his experiences and views of campus events in the weekly blog for DN_Campus.

Supporting campus departments and organizations is important to me. Whether it is the Daily News, Ball Bearings or another student organization, I think that everyone can learn from the high levels of student collaboration involved. To this end, I attended a performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," by the Department of Theatre and Dance this week.

This production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" merged elements of traditional theater with multimedia. For example, the group uses projection and video editing to enhance the performance while incorporating music by The Beatles. This use of technology made the performance memorable.

However, I was not completely sold on the connection between Shakespeare and The Beatles. The music emphasized the humor of the play, but otherwise it did not contribute to the overall story. Regardless, the mixture did allow them to present the play in a more contemporary way.

The performance showcased the skills of the students well and presented "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with innovation. I really enjoyed the costumes and sets involved.

The costume for Puck, in particular, was really well done.

This production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" was entered into the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, which aims to promote quality college-level theater production. The production is eligible for inclusion in a regional festival and has potential for national recognition.

There are not a lot of events this week because of Thanksgiving, so I would just like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to finish the semester strong. I know this time of year can be particularly hard for college students, but the holidays are almost here.
