People lined up around University Square to buy cupcakes for $1.11 during cardinal cupcakes and coneys grand opening.
Owner and Ball State alumna Melissa Bucur said when she was a student here, the Village was hopping with business, and when she returned, she found otherwise.
"We use to have a Buffalo Wild Wings and many other places for student to hang out," she said. "I've always been a baker and I want to bring back what it once was."
Bucur said she wants her shop to be a place where people can stop in, meet friends and just hang out.
Between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., the shop saw a few hundred people and went through 100 coneys, Bucur said.
The newest addition to University Square in the Village offers 10 different flavors of cupcakes, and each of their names are linked to Ball State landmarks. Cupcakes include the chocolate-flavored Benny, the lemon-flavored Duck Pond and the carrot and walnut-flavored Bell Tower.
Kristian Addington, sophomore nursing major, said she thinks the shop is a great idea.
"I've never thought of cupcakes and coneys together," she said. "School food gets so boring, and it's nice to get diversity that is close by."
Cardinal cupcakes & coneys also has a full menu besides baked goods. It sells nachos, muffins and six flavors of New England coffee. Bucur said she plans on selling soft pretzels soon.
Frequent student discounts will be available here and there, too, Bucur said. The lowest priced item is the cupcake, which normally sells for $1.75 and the highest priced item is a coney meal at $7, which comes with two coney hotdogs, chips and a drink.
Stephanie Tarrant, junior photojournalism major and cardinal cupcakes & coneys employee, said the shop began to come together about three weeks ago when everyone was hired.
"The morning went pretty smoothly," she said. "We had a few people in for coffee and muffins in the morning. From about 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., we had a line wrapped around the store."
The team of employees try to have everything prepared by 11 a.m., and around 11:30 a.m., they begin decorating the cupcakes, Tarrant said.
"This idea took years in the making, but it finally became a reality," Bucur said.
