This week marks this year's nationally-recognized School Psychology Awareness Week.
Ball State graduate student Becky Greene will have a station setup by the elevators in the front lobby of the Teachers College to answer any questions and provide information about school psychology from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today and Tuesday. There also will be a raffle and candy.
Activities for the remaining days of the week will be setup elsewhere for those students within the school psychology department.
Greene said this week's focus is not affiliated with Ball State's Counseling Center, but rather with the school psychology program.
"School Psychology [Awareness] Week is a week that we really try to promote who we are and what we do," Greene said. "Our focus is to help kids succeed academically, socially, behaviorally [and] emotionally in the school by collaborating with other professionals in the school setting."
The field of school psychology studies student populations involving children and youth, according to the National Association of School Psychologists website.
Greene, who expects to earn her Masters/Ed.S. in school psychology in 2013, said types of programs she and other graduate students and colleagues do involve evaluating students to see what kinds of help they need in terms of qualifying for special education.
According to NASP, this year's theme is "Every link matters. Make a connection," which is designed to offer resources and activities that school psychologists can use to work with school staff, faculty, administrators and parents to reach students.
The website also said school psychologists' role is to also "create safe, healthy and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school and the community for all students."
