The Homecoming Steering Committee is kicking off Homecoming Week with opening day festivities tonight.
Students will have the chance to watch their peers compete in various games and to attend a dance party with a live DJ.
This year's Homecoming theme is "It's A Bird ... It's A Game ... It's Homecoming!"
"The [Homecoming Steering] Committee really wanted to incorporate the superhero Superman logo, so we made it more of a BSU style with that," Brittney Williams, Homecoming Steering Committee special events chairwoman, said. "We thought each day of homecoming could reference that very well and the overall idea of it that everyone would enjoy at Ball State."
Opening day will begin with a pep rally with coach Pete Lembo, some of the football team, Ball State cheerleaders, Code Red Dancers and the Ball State Drumline.
After the rally, three different games will start: root beer pong, corn hole and tug-of-war. Ninety-one teams registered as either independent teams, greek teams or residence hall teams.
"We have high hopes for not only the participants to come, but also their friends to come and cheer them on," Williams said. "Especially for the freshmen who don't know what homecoming is or those who don't know what it's all about."
This year will have a new addition to opening day events. A dance party will follow after the games. DJ Heartbreaker is showcasing and will have crowd video screens.
"We're really excited because it's a great way to kick off the rest of the week's events," Williams said. "It also brings in people of all different types of interests together and to get excited about everything else in Homecoming Week."
