Homecoming food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank starts today

This week, students, as well as faculty, will have the opportunity to act like superheroes while contributing to this year's Homecoming theme by giving to families in need.

As part of this year's homecoming community service, Ball State Saves the Day!, is asking students, faculty and staff to donate non-perishable canned food items at any residence hall or the Alumni Center during Homecoming Week.

"With the whole superhero theme, we wanted to have a way to give back to the community," Megan Johnston, Steering Committee's special events chairwoman, said. "So we thought the whole superhero thing, going out and volunteering and also doing the food drive and doing the blood drive, [would help us give] back as many ways as possible."

Donations will go to Second Harvest Food Bank in Muncie.

Second Harvest's mission is to provide a coordinated approach to ending hunger in East Central Indiana.

Susan Land, development associate at Second Harvest, said Ball State is a great partner because it provides a large number of volunteers. She also said donating helps provide people an opportunity to "help feed their hungry neighbors in Central Indiana."

She said the country's poor economic status is one reason why students and faculty should donate.

"The need just continues to grow as we stay in this economy that we have," Land said. "Things are not getting better for folks. They seem to be almost getting worse because the longer we're in this situation, there's more people that need help."

Johnston said she thinks Ball State has a bad reputation for not caring about the community and the food drive is a way to show there are students who care.

"The Muncie community gives so much to students," she said. "And it's just a way for us to give back. There are a lot of families in Muncie that are lower income and they are below the poverty line and they need our help."

Any questions about the food drive should be sent to Johnston at mljohnston28@gmail.com.
