Architect to be first speaker in new series

The College of Architecture and Planning is starting a new lecture series called "Conversations" today with the visit of architecture leader and Ball State alumnus Joe Mrak.

The lecture will be held at 1 p.m. today in the CAP building room 100.

Mrak is a principal architect for RQAW Consulting Engineers and Architects. He graduated from Ball State in 1981.

The event will consist of 40 minutes of dialog between Mrak and Mahesh Daas, chairperson of the department and Irving Distinguished Professor of Architecture, with an open forum for audience questions to follow.

Daas explained the event is meant to emphasize the life of the guests, rather than their careers.

"We often talk about the work of an architect, but we seldom look at the life of an architect — particularly the life of a leader," Daas said.

Though the series has an emphasis on architecture, Daas said it should be appealing to all students. The series focuses on the importance of leadership, mentorship and methods of establishing a career — topics that are relevant to students in all areas of study.

Future guest speakers will not strictly be from architectural fields, either, Daas said. Guests will include professionals from a variety of fields.

This is the only lecture of the "Conversations" series planned for the fall. The other two lectures of the series will take place next semester.

"This is the first time we're trying something like this," Daas said. "We would like to see how this goes and what can be done better."

No registration is necessary to attend. The lecture will also be available via live webcast.
