The Fall Semester means more bikes on campus, which equals more bike thefts.
The Student Government Association is trying to prevent bikes from being stolen, and to locate lost bikes with the help of the University Police Department.
Today and Friday there will be free bike registration on campus.
Students can meet with SGA members to register their bicycles from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today outside the Student Recreation and Wellness Center under a UPD tent. Friday, they will move to the Scramble Light.
The usual $1 registration fee will be waived by registering with SGA, but students can also register through their residence halls.
The purpose of the event is to make sure bikes are registered properly to help police locate stolen bikes and to teach students how to properly lock their bikes in order to prevent theft, said Kevin Thurman, chair of the Student Safety Committee in SGA.
"[Students] can learn a lot about the way to properly register their bike, the benefits of registering their bike, as well as proper ways to lock [their] bike up on campus," Thurman said.
Thurman said the only way to properly lock a bike is with a U-lock, and it is the only lock recommended by UPD.
To register, students should know the serial number for their bike, but Thurman recommends bringing the bicycle so UPD can guarantee everything is registered as it should be.
Thurman said he wants to see a lot of registered bikes because it helps the campus as a whole.
"We'd love to have a huge support," he said. "It benefits the students and it is for their own good."
Sponsors of the event are SGA, UPD, WCRD, Ball State Energy Action Team and Outdoor Pursuits.
