SOCCER: Ball State anxious for practice to transfer to games

Slip ups in games keeping the Cardinals from playing the way they want to

Another week of addressing the same issues in practice seemed to spark a new attitude in the soccer team.

All the talk is done.

It is time for the preparation to yield results.

Ball State takes its new, serious approach to Flagstaff this weekend to play in the Northern Arizona University High Altitude Tournament. The team plays Northern Arizona on Friday and Lamar on Sunday.

"We had to correct different aspects in our game earlier in the season," junior defender Amanda Dreyfus said. "But recently we've focused on finishing and I think it's really going to help us in the games this weekend."

In double-weekend games this season, the Cardinals inconsistent play makes it hard to judge their performance. One game, the scoring problems look over and the next the team can't put any chances away.

Coach Craig Roberts said the team played "relatively well" in all of their double-weekend games, but that second game keeps getting away.

Ball State's level of competition makes two wins very reachable this weekend. Northern Arizona is winless this season and Lamar is 1-2.

One challenge in the Cardinals way is the altitude and time difference. The team arrived in Arizona Thursday to try and acclimate. Friday's game against Northern Arizona is at 7 p.m. MT, which is equivalent to a 10 p.m. start time in the East.

"The girls are experienced and aware of how to handle these changes and prepare," Roberts said. "We're just eager to play right now."
