OUR VIEW: Take care

AT ISSUE: When safety risks are heightened, students should take advantage of resources

While the world waits for a bit of good news about a missing IU student, we're reminded that anyone can become the next Lauren Spierer.

Walking home from a bar or house party, nobody ever expects to be the person nabbed right off the street.

The first six weeks of school are called the Red Zone. It's the most dangerous time for sexual assaults on campus, when students — especially freshmen – are most vulnerable.

Ball State is a pretty safe campus, but crime persists at other state colleges as well.

Stumbling around drunk decreases your chances of making it home without a problem. Man or woman, we need to take responsibility for our actions.

For those of us walking home late at night — from a party or just doing our job at the student newspaper — there's plenty of ways to stay safe.

Charlie's Charter is a free transportation service for late night rides around campus-owned or -controlled property. It's available Sunday through Thursday from 6 p.m. until 3:30 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays.

Want to take a "rad" self-defense course? Rape Aggressive Defense classes are offered through the University Police Department. Training officers will offer group seminars starting in a few weeks.

The blue lights are another safety feature. Eighteen safety lights are scattered in almost every corner of campus, but University Police said they're only used about once a year to report a crime. People sometimes use them to ask information, even though pressing the button without a real emergency is illegal, according to UPD.

We hope you enjoy these first few weeks of college. Have fun getting to know the way of life at Ball State, and please don't let the party scene dictate that culture. Watch out for your friends. Walk with each other on your late-night excursions.

We're all for having a good time. But the last thing we want to see is the poster of a missing classmate.
