Seeing women flock down McKinley Avenue in formal attire and running through the quad for bid day on Monday night, we find the sorority rituals unusual and unfamiliar. Watching fraternity brothers hang out with potential new recruits in their front lawns, it looks like such fun.
Times like this remind us that college flies by way too quickly, and if we don't get involved in something we're passionate about, we'll miss out on the learning and life lessons that take place outside the classroom.
We love seeing all the camaraderie during recruitment week. It's great to see people banding together to achieve a common goal of sister and brotherhood.
We only get four years here on campus — sometimes a bit longer — and though it may seem like quite a while when you're sitting in class, it's really not that much time.
Though much of this week will be dominated by greek recruitment, we'd like to remind you that there are still opportunities to get involved — even if you aren't interested in seeing those greek letters in the windows of Woodworth Complex or along Riverside Avenue.
If you're looking to make a difference here on campus, there are plenty of options. You could join Student Voluntary Services, Circle K, Best Buddies or College Mentors for Kids. Each of these organizations participates in service on and around campus.
If you're looking to make changes to campus, join the Student Government Association. With events such as the T-shirt Trade-in happening this week, it's easy to see this organization is aimed at pushing Ball State to be the best it
can be.
If you like to attend Late Nite or University Program Board events, why not consider joining the groups and helping plan the signature activities that students look forward to each year? Wouldn't it be great to contribute to Late Nite Carnival or any of UPB's annual events?
Each organization offers its own perks and each has its own rituals. We won't go into the rituals involving a Mario hat and princess tiara around the news editor's desk. Let's just say every group and club has its own signature elements.
Join the fun before it's too late — before you're walking across the stage to earn a diploma, and realizing that all you learned from college is what was gained in the classroom.
