Leaders say Daniels' remarks could hurt NW Ind.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Northwest Indiana politicians said Gov. Mitch Daniels remarks about the region's political and business climate in his new book could hurt the area's redevelopment efforts.

In "Keeping the Republic: Saving America by Trusting Americans," the Republican governor said the region's "reputation for governmental corruption and labor union aggression" makes the area "a place employers are more likely to flee than invest in."

The Times of Munster reported that Democratic state Rep. Charlie Brown of Gary said Daniels seems to be "shooting businesses away from this area of the state." Democratic Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. agreed that the remarks were inappropriate.

The Times said Daniels stood by his comments this week.
