INDIANAPOLIS — A newspaper study found that 28 Marion County Jail inmates were mistakenly released during a three-year period.
The Indianapolis Star reports Saturday that about nine inmates a year were improperly released from 2008 through 2010, mostly due to paperwork problems or human error. The 28 had been in jail on charges ranging from drunken driving to robbery. Most were caught within a few days, though some were at large for several weeks before they were recaptured or turned themselves in.
None of the 28 are accused of committing crimes while they were out of jail.
Since 2008, 14 jail employees have been disciplined for improper releases. None were fired.
The jail releases 67,000 inmates annually.
The Star reports most Indiana jails don't track improper releases.
